His wisdom, quips and observations on everything under the sun… and a few things under the sea. The image is the same in each case, but the words are different. Oh yes.

What a guy! What a wit! What sideburns!

Check out and LIKE his facebook page folks, just set up recently and already full of serious and silly sayings by the lad himself:

Our award winning comic book Portraits of Violence is now out on Comixology. Fresh out this week.

Somewhat to my surprise the book was far better received that I thought it would be, selling the most of all my 'social issue' type books so far, getting an award and four foreign language versions. Nice!

So get your ebook/digital version here, for a good price:

Up go the defenses!

Sometimes my publishers tell me not to respond to negative reviews because it just makes you look defensive.
But when someone write something utter bollocks, gives it a one star and this damages the rep of a good book (because various folk will believe the crap) then my defensive walls go up and out come the cannon. Here is my reaction to a review of our SECRETS OF THE NINJA book on Amazon that was wrong on almost every point:

Hi, im the writer of the book and what you say here is incorrect in a various ways.
1. You say "The book tittle successfully tricked me to buy this book."...The title is not meant to be a trick in any way. Its a clear description of the actual contents. The things discussed in it were ninja secrets then, and they come directly from a book, the Shinobi Hiden, written around 1560, which was translated into English by experts connected with our book.
2. You say "there is a disclaimer in the book stating the secret ninja teaching may or may not from Hattori Hanzo." - that applies to ALL such work connected to the Shinobi hiden, since historical research has been unable to confirm that he definitely wrote the book. It is thought that he did, presumed so, but researchers are not sure. It is in no way a trick related to this specific book, that is a point of honesty in historical research. You make that honesty sounds like evasion.
3."the short story in the book has nothing to do with Hattori Hanzo. " - each of the techniques that the ninja go into is based on real techniques from the Shinobi Hiden. IF Hattori Hanzo wrote that, as is assumed, then the contents are directly from his ideas, right?
4. "The book content also so shallow in term of what so called ninja tricks" - since they are REAL ninja techniques from a respected book of shinobi ninja, then how can they be shallow?
Though you are right on ONE aspect, they are not new. They come from the 16thC and before.

Ya eejit.

Talk in Tokyo May 2018

6/7/2018

We had a good event at Lakeland University in Tokyo recently. About 50 people came to my talk about learning history via manga/comics. I went into how comics are a good way of learning about 'serious' subjects such as history. And how this is a useful way to get over the quite incorrect idea that 'history is boring and difficult' which we often come up against.

I also introduced our new book there, Kodansha's billingual book, 'Saigo Takamori and the Seinan Senso', which was coming out the next day . We had a history quiz, just for fun and the audience asked some great questions after. Then about a dozen of us had a drink at a Scottish themed bar nearby. And fish. And chips.

A good evening all round.

More academics doing comics!

'Readers' Liberation' is the new book by Jonathan Rose, a professor whose research on 19thC mutual-help reading groups in Britain was recently very useful for me in my own new book. So, I thought I'd spread HIS new book about a bit!

In it he looks at the history of independent sceptical reading and self-education by disadvantaged people... including comic books and cartoons:

"In 1955 Puck, a humor weekly, commissioned a remarkably sophisticated and nuanced study of reader response, surveying 700 Chicago residents for their reactions to the Sunday comics. It was a moment when intellectuals were most anxious about mass culture, and the comics seemed to be the ultimate “standardized form of entertainment and advertising. Large sections of their audience receive similar or identical Comic strips and Comic sections every weekend.” The investigators therefore began with the assumption that the funny papers were “a stereotyped experience for the reader, the same for one and all . . . determined by the creators and publishers of the Comic sections. The Comic reader would, presumably, read the strips as the creators wish, and feel as they wish him to feel.” But this, they found, was:
far from the truth for our respondents . . . For the consumer and reader, the Comic experience tends to be personal, private, and even secret, not visible to others, and only partly visible to the reader. The Comics are like an iceberg, with the important and significant part of their meaning tending to be below the surface and concealed from the public view. Most of the people we studied appeared to be active readers of the Comics. They sought out the kinds of strips and the kinds of activity within the strips which interested them and gave them satisfaction. They selected and chose, manipulated and interpreted, in order to obtain the experience they desired from the Comics. Physically passive while reading, they tended to participate emotionally.
Well before Susan Sontag published “Against Interpretation,” these readers experienced the comics intensely and immediately, and did not closely analyze or understand their own responses. Drawing on a series of interviews, the investigators found that: “The total experience people have with the Comics, the satisfactions they receive, is conscious as well as unconscious.”
