As i’ve been saying to my Italian comrade Davide Calzetti recently, the focus on generations is overdone. Clearly different generations have different experiences, but nowadays its given way too much focus, at the expense of what the actual cause of the trouble is.
1. An over focus on generations tends to over emphasize how good things were in the past in a silly way that causes misunderstanding. Some so called millennial, born between 1981 and 2000, and therefore teenagers now or in their 20s, seem to think that the 1950s to 90s was a golden age of great living. But, actually, there were very serious economic and social problems in much of that time. 2. It glosses over the fact that a large percentage of the previous generation are also facing economic and social problems NOW. Quite a lot of folk in their 40s and 50s have serious troubles too. 3. It sets generation against generation in a way that is a total waste of time (as it setting ethnic groups or genders against each other), because that is not the cause of the tropuble or where the solution can be made. 4. It takes us away from the most important thing - which is that basic problem is capitalism itself, which causes trouble for 99% of us, of all ages, ethnic groups and genders. Those problems of capitalism are always there but just come out more at certain generations. We need to focus on that and deal with that, across all groups. |
