ooh, what a surprise!

One cliché of story telling is the ‘surprise ending’. I remember being, ah, surprised, one time when a person I was speaking to about a comic book story said it was not interesting because they could already guess the ending. They seemed to take it for granted that a good story must have a surprise at the end. I suppose quite a lot of people would say that but it struck me as a rather limited way to think of stories.

Generally, when I read a comic book or a novel it's of almost no concern to me whether it has a surprise ending or not. I find it engaging if the process of what unfolds is interesting. Same goes for non-fiction. I already know that Hitler lost the war, it does not lessen my enjoyment of reading about how it happened. As I recently heard Salman Rushdie say, despite all the talk about 3 act structures and plot points and the climax etc, the only thing that really matters about a book is this: is it interesting?

The end.

online course  'Radical Reading: Comic Books on Social Issues'

I’m tutoring a new online course for the SSCC (School for Social and Cultural Change), called:

'Radical Reading: Comic Books on Social Issues'

Enrolments are open now for the 2nd appearance of this course, which begins on July the 1st.

“This course is an 8 week look at the idea of comic books or graphic novels as radical literature on various social issues. It will consider how the still common image of comic books as being a medium for just comedy or fantasy for children or teenagers readers is inaccurate. Modern graphic novels tackle subjects of history, biography, race, gender, class and the economic system. They do so often from a radical point of view, as a type of grassroots literature. Various examples will be looked at in short videos and text sections. There will be a zoom meeting each week, which all students are welcome to take part in.”

Please think about joining it. This college just started this year and needs the support. The cost is low, but the subjects are high!

'Economic Exploitation Wont Win'.

"If you see a reply to BBC Sport posts with an expression of hate on the basis of race, colour, gender, nationality, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexuality, sex, age or class..."

This campaign is a very good thing and nice to see class added to that list, as a reflection of the growing awareness that we need to focus on economic inequality as well, in tandem with a focus on gender and race.

But it needs to go further than that. Sport is horribly polluted by the economic profit factor, right from the massive salaries the rich players... down to local clubs and youth centers desperate for funds for even simple things like decent uniforms for the kids.

Wide scale economic reform should happen in football and many sports, so that the money is spread out to benefit the local areas the clubs are based in. There should be a universal rule brought in saying that at least, say, 25% (and why not even more?) of the revenue of places like Manchester United has to go to local youth clubs, sports centers and other things for the people of Manchester... or Barcelona or Glasgow or Munich, etc. Rather than into the pockets of an already very rich elite.

So, while the current campaign is a good one, im looking forward to the day the symbol says:

'Economic Exploitation Wont Win'.

Or is that too radical a way to make society better?

New book just out, for people interested in Japan and the role of festivals, ceremonies and everyday magic.

"I love delving into the history, beliefs, and traditions of other countries and cultures so I personally found ‘The Spirit of Japan – Festivals, Rituals & Everyday Magic’ to be rather a good read and would certainly recommend this book to those who would be interested in learning about alternative beliefs, cultures, religions, traditions and such-like as it is hugely informative and also very interesting!" - Review from Rachel Swirl

Not a comic book, but with 20 lovely illustrations by Fumio Obata.

Nice.
